Punjabi Women Sold as ‘Slave’ in Saudi Arabia, Travel Agent Booked

A 39 year old Punjabi woman from Gorsian village of Jalandhar was sold to a Saudi Arabian family as a slave for Rs. 3.5 lakh. The district police have booked a travel agent allegedly responsible for selling the woman under provisions of Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act.

Under the pretext of offering employment, Paramjit Kaur, was sold to a Saudi family. After setting foot in the family, she was told she will not be paid for her services. She also added that if she had to be set free, then, her family need to pay Rs 3.5 lakh to the Saudi family, which is a huge sum for them.

The case was registered following a complaint lodged by Kaur’s husband Malkiat Ram. Ram who is a daily wager told that, as they were struggling financially, had to let his wife leave for Saudi Arabia to work. While Ram has also asked the Union Government to help him, Mukesh Kumar, Nakodar Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP), said, “The accused is absconding and the efforts are on to nab him.”
