The Global Report on Trafficking in Persons is produced by UNODC every two years, to inform an effective response to this crime and place it within the context of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda. The 2020 edition covers data from the world’s largest database on trafficking victims, compiling figures from official sources across 148 countries.

This brief by Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) aims to contribute to global anti-trafficking efforts aimed at mitigating the effects of the pandemic on human-trafficking situations and actors, not only by providing timely, comprehensive overview and transparent information, but also by suggesting holistic and multi-stakeholder responses and interventions.

The 2019 report, the 19th installment, includes narratives for 187 countries and territories, including the U.S.

Girls from socio-economically marginalized communities are still falling prey to Devadasi practice, a long-standing tradition of dedicating prepubescent/pubescent girls as Devadasis (slaves of god), who are thereafter commercially sexually exploited for the rest of their lives. The study attempts to identify the gaps in the current legislations prohibiting dedication besides examining the application of legislations and schemes.
