This guide by Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative has been designed to assist survivors of sexual violence, and anyone helping them, at the first stage of the legal process. Presented as ‘Frequently Asked Questions’, the guide provides information to help adult and child survivors report complaints and guide them through the process of registration; informs survivors of remedies if their complaints are refused at the police station; and points to steps that can be taken to hold the police accountable for delay or refusal to register in certain cases. It explains the new penal provision codified in Section 166A(c) of the Indian Penal Code which penalizes failure of police to register FIR for specified sexual offences.
